National Vice President of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, Comrade Kehinde Taiga, is not comfortable with the method the Delta state government is employing in the distribution of the food procured for the people of the state.
Reports available to us revealed that the committees set up by the state government comprised more of appointees of the state government with chairmen of Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the distribution of the food procured by the state government for the people of Delta state.
One of the committees sighted by the our reporter was that of Aniocha North local government area which comprised chairman of the local government council, member representing the local government in the state house of assembly, the commissioner for youths, chairman of the state civil service commission and the CAN chairman from the area.
Comrade Taiga said the composition of the committee is an indication that the state government has made the food distribution a PDP affair and not a Delta state government affair, stressing that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is governor of Delta state and not of PDP.
Taiga’s belief is that dominating the committee with PDP members is an indication that the state government has made the distribution a PDP affair, hence Delta people who are not members of the PDP, those who are not politicians may not benefit from the food.
For him, rather than using PDP people as members of the committee, the governor should have used neutral individuals such as members of civil society, community leaders, village heads, people who are removed from the PDP fold to make the distribution reach the most vulnerable and the entire people of the state.
He said: “If you are an APC member, you may not get the food. We condemn that arrangement. As it is now, it is a PDP arrangement, not Delta state arrangement. The committee should not be government appointees. It should not be within the PDP or government appointees. Okowa is not governor of PDP but governor of Delta state.
“His business should not revolve around PDP members but people of Delta state because this is a serious business that should be removed from political affiliation. The committee members will only share the food to their loyalists and followers. If someone did not vote for governor, he may not get the food.
“Okowa is not governor of PDP but of Delta state. The committee should cut across community leaders, Christians, Muslims, CSOs and others but not PDP members. They know people who cannot provide for themselves. Most of the appointees do not go to their communities, how will they know who is poor and not poor. It’s only during election they come, campaign and go back to their cities.”
